Governor Phil Murphy has long made it clear that increasing green energy projects in the state is a top priority of his administration.

Murphy knows this, too: The initiative relies on the private sector to do its part.

That’s why Murphy was so excited Tuesday to see global retailer UNIQLO unveil its first U.S. solar rooftop — a 3.4-megawatt solar project it’s building with Luminace at its new distribution facility. near Phillipsburg.

“My administration’s efforts to achieve 100% clean energy by 2050 would not be possible without the cooperation of our state’s businesses,” Murphy said at the opening.

“I thank UNIQLO and Luminace for their partnership in installing these solar panels on the roof of their nearly 1 million-square-foot facility in our very own Phillipsburg, New Jersey. These actions take us one step closer to closer to a greener economy and create a stronger, safer and healthier environment for all New Jerseyans.”

UNIQLO said the project is an important step in a climate strategy of its parent company, Fast Retailing.

A 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations and a 20% reduction in GHG emissions from its supply chain are among the 2030 targets announced recently – and the company is committed to carbon neutrality in 2050.

UNIQLO USA CEO Daisuke Tsukagoshi said the solar project is in line with the company’s vision and mission.

“UNIQLO aims to improve the everyday lives of people everywhere through our apparel called LifeWear,” he said. “We are proud of this important milestone that expands our mission beyond clothing, helping to make our operations better for the planet.

“We are honored to partner with Luminace, a pioneer in the renewable energy sector, on this state-of-the-art project, which will increase the world’s renewable energy footprint starting in New Jersey.”

Luminace CEO Valerie Hannah said her company is happy to do its part.

“Luminace is happy to support UNIQLO’s commitment to renewable energy and their goal of carbon neutrality,” he said. “This project demonstrates Luminace’s unique turnkey decarbonization solutions, providing accessible, reliable and renewable energy, at no cost to our customers.”
