Climate on the agenda

Vernon’s Climate Action Network hopes to make the environment a key issue in the municipal election.

“Let’s make this the most climate action-oriented municipal election ever,” the group said in an email newsletter.

“The news is not good – our climate is beginning to change dramatically as we reach tipping points. We are now seeing unprecedented heat domes, wildfires and extreme weather events. affecting our health and our livelihoods. The world must act – there is no time to waste.”

The group says the upcoming election is an “important opportunity” for change.

“Although climate change efforts are needed at all levels of government, local governments are particularly well positioned to respond to climate change,” it said.

“The Federation of Canadian Municipalities estimates that more than 50 percent of emissions are under the direct influence of local governments, and since local governments are the level closest to the community, they are also the leading response efforts when preparing for the effects of climate change.”

CAN says the City of Vernon, North Okanagan Regional District and member communities can make a big difference by investing in energy efficiency and cutting GHG emissions in areas such as energy use in construction, land use, transportation, waste, and agriculture.

“There are climate solutions – there must be political will and the capacity of the community for greater cooperation and mutual support.”

CAN encourages activists to run for office or support other “climate champions.”

It plans on the Vital Vernon and Green Okanagan websites to publicize the candidates’ positions on climate.
