Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power companies that also manages power distribution in Odisha in collaboration with the state government, while participating in the Make in Odisha conclave, announced its vision to transform Odisha. to a clean energy hub through its clean and green. energy solutions and offerings.
The company has already marked its presence across the state’s clean energy value chain comprising of EV Charging points, Solar Rooftop, Solar Pumps, Floating Solar, Pumped Hydro and Microgrids.
To promote clean mobility, Tata Power plans to install 1,000 charging points across the state in the next five years. It has already installed 50 EV charging points while 97 additional charging points are under various stages of installation and commissioning. The company is currently facilitating the EV charging ecosystem through various initiatives such as chargers on NH 16 which is an integral part of the golden quadrilateral, prime tourist corridors and interstate highways connecting Odisha. Tata Power has also partnered with Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) to deploy charging infra in Multi level Car Parking Lots and Public Utilities such as Hospitals, Universities, Malls, and important city hubs.
Tata Power is working towards solarization in the agriculture sector with the state government. It has already installed more than 700 solar pumps in addition to 1200 double pumps for community drinking application across the state. It plans to install 1,00,000 solar pumps in the next five years.

Considering Odisha’s huge potential to use renewable energy Tata power wants to participate in renewable and clean energy growth in the state.
In the Rooftop Solar space, the company has over 25 MW installations across the state which equates to 7.07 lakh tonnes of CO2 emission reduction and planting of 11.31 lakh trees. The Company’s Rooftop Solar offering is used in various industries including Cashew Processing units, Oil Mills, Handloom, Steel and Manufacturing Industries et al. With better coverage of households, commercial and industrial establishments in the state to adopt rooftop and ground mounted solar systems, there is an opportunity to install about 1000 MW of rooftop solar in the State.
The nine districts of Odisha in the south-western region can pioneer the use of solar power. If only 25% of the available wasteland is in these districts, about 44 GW of solar power plants can be installed.
Moreover, Floating Solar capacity is estimated to be around 5000 MW across various water reservoirs in Odisha and Tata Power wants to use its expertise to set up such plants.
Dr Sinha welcomed the Renewable Energy Policy 2022 of the Government of Odisha, which was unveiled at the Odisha conclave today. The incentives under the Renewable Energy Policy such as waiver on Electricity Duty, Wheeling charge, Cross Subsidy Surcharge, State Transmission Utility charge are very encouraging and lead to aggressive deployment of clean and green energy solutions.
Tata Power also wants to use its expertise in running Pumped Storage Power Stations (PSPS) to help meet the state’s peak power demand and work closely with OHPC for the development of Pumped storage hydro projects. .
The company is working on the electrification of remote villages, with the support of the Energy Department and OERC, by setting up Microgrids. A technical feasibility study was conducted in some villages of Mayurbhanj District to establish Microgrids for rural/tribal economic transformation.
To ensure sustainable energy consumption, Tata Power Discoms also offers Smart IoT based solutions for residential, commercial and industrial customers. This offering helps in load balancing in case of Rooftop Solar installation. In addition, the company also offers digital motion sensors and sensor-based LED lighting, which can help save about 80% of power for industrial consumers in factories, warehouses, cold storage and others.
Apart from this, Tata Power has changed the electricity distribution scenario in the State by making Rs. 6000 crore capex investment in Distribution Business in next 5 years. To support Ease of Doing Business in the state, Tata Power Discoms has launched several initiatives for industrial consumers including MSMEs such as – integrated power system control centers, cyclone resilient network, new connectivity through online mediums (WhatsApp and e-mail), missed calls and with minimal documentation, mobile apps, GIS Mapping for accurate visibility of the infrastructure for maintaining and increasing the network and Smart Metering.
Discoms also provide an option for 100% adoption of renewable energy in the industrial sector. To provide customized energy solutions to industrial consumers, Discoms are also appointing client relationship managers in key industrial belts.
Tata Power is also creating job opportunities for local youth in operations, maintenance, and metering work at Discoms. Since taking over the erstwhile Discoms in the state, around 2000 job opportunities have been provided and more than the existing 11,000 employees working with the 4 Odisha Discoms. Through new investments and clean and green energy solutions and product offerings, this number could touch 5,000 in the next 5 years.
