LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep 15, 2022–

Route, the e-commerce platform that connects merchants and consumers by tracking every order in one place, today debuted its carbon-neutral shipping initiative—Green Package Protection—to help -neutralize harmful emissions caused by the shipping industry. Route is expanding its flagship 1-Click Protect offer, backed by a bonafide insurance program, to cover more than the cost of lost, stolen or damaged packages. By introducing Green Package Protection, Ruta covers the cost of helping to neutralize shipments with participating brand partners–at zero cost to merchants and consumers.

Green Package Protection represents the first step in a fully integrated sustainability strategy. Rebecca Minkoff, EB Denim, Logan Hollowell are among 4,700 brand partners participating in a larger effort to unite fashion and technology for a greener e-commerce future. Each founder joined Route and climate action platform partner Patch in its official New York Fashion Week debut. The route also announced its support for a project to remove methane from a landfill near its Utah headquarters, to help neutralize carbon emissions from launch activity.

“Route is determined to make a measurable, meaningful impact to neutralize the carbon generated in the shipping process, starting with a carefully researched sustainability approach,” said Evan Walker, founder and CEO of Route . “We have invested almost a year of time and resources in evaluating potential projects and partners around the world. New York Fashion Week could not have been a better time for us to reveal our first initiative, together with technology leaders and brands that are equally committed to sustainability and the e-commerce experience for consumers.

Each order with Green Package Protection directly supports the first Route project, an agroforestry initiative in Brazil, chosen in partnership with the climate action platform Patch and already helping to neutralize emissions from more of 1 million packages since the beta launch. It also brings the Route closer to its own investment and goal of neutralizing 100,000 tons of carbon emissions–the equivalent of planting 160,000 trees. Real-time tracking allows users to see their collective impact on the Route tracking app.

“It is critical that every company considers how they can take action to address the climate crisis through their own business operations,” said Brennan Spellacy, CEO & Co-founder of Patch, the carbon-neutral partner of Route. “With Ruta, we are paving the way for e-commerce to collectively contribute to positive climate solutions, putting accessibility and transparency at the forefront of sustainable practices.”

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports that in addition to emission reductions, the global carbon removal capacity should be increased to 10 billion tons per year by 2050. The route uses the scale of the e- its commerce to empower immediate action–now. At the same time, e-commerce generated $257.3 billion in the US in Q2 2022 alone. Route’s e-commerce ecosystem, which includes 18,000 merchants, makes sustainability a simple step by turning it into millions of orders on the Route app every month.

“Purchasing decisions drive the future of climate action in fashion,” said designer and founder of Rebecca Minkoff and Route Green Partner. “Whether it is ensuring that our customers have access to a choice made to order sustainable designs or the Route development to neutralize emissions from shipping, environmental awareness is one fundamental step in the shoppers’ post-purchase experience.”

According to a recent report, 87% of buyers will buy a product because its company advocates for an issue they care about and 77% of companies surveyed found that sustainability leads to of brand loyalty. A survey also found that eight out of ten consumers consider the environment when shopping, and will even pay a premium for green brands.

“The carbon neutral shipping route program gives environmentally conscious customers a way to feel good about doing business with you, and making an impact,” added Walker. “Ultimately, our goal is to make sustainability participation accessible so no one can say ‘no’ to green.”
