Bronx: One thing that scares me is when people call asylum seekers illegal aliens. I read letters in the paper and posts on social media where people don’t seem to get the difference.
People seeking asylum are required to present themselves at the border to make the request. They are being processed and allowed to remain here until their case is heard, according to international and US law. Donald Trump actually broke the law when he turned away asylum seekers.
Our courts are severely understaffed and cases have to be heard forever but that is how it currently works. Either increase funding to strengthen immigration courts or change the law – don’t just complain about the situation and then refuse to do anything constructive to fix it. I’m talking to you, Republicans.
This is the reason that Florida Gov. may be in trouble. Ron DeSantis on the stunt he pulled. Florida passed a law allocating $12 million in COVID relief funds to bring illegal immigrants who are in Florida out of that state. Because the migrants he brought to Massachusetts were Venezuelan asylum seekers who had been processed and were therefore not illegal — and were physically in Texas, not Florida — he used the funds improperly. His reasoning that “they’ll eventually stop in Florida” just doesn’t cut it unless he claims he has extrasensory perception. Carol Webb
Jackson Heights: Just wondering why John Gehring’s op-ed about Catholic governors Greg Abbott, Ron DeSantis and Doug Ducey’s treatment of migrants (“These Catholic GOP governors are not pro-life,” Sept. 22) does not mention the Catholic President Biden. The president sent the migrants to different cities across the country without informing the communities involved. Are Catholic Democrats held to a different set of standards than Catholic Republicans? Mary Dorgan
Manhattan: Re your editorial “Making the Electoral Count count” (Sept. 26): There is a better way to “do whatever it takes to protect the will of the people”: Get rid of the Electoral College altogether! This has been nothing but trouble for us, most recently in 2016, or have you forgotten about that disaster? Every other election is decided by one person, one vote, and the office of the presidency must be decided the same way because he is the president of all US citizens. We should also vote in the same way and within the same timeframe for the president, to avoid and make it easier to track any differences. Lynne A. Henderson
Manhattan: QAnon, oh QAnon / I believe in you / And your nutty conspiracy theories / I’m sure they’re true / I need a mob of supporters / Who’s crazier than me / To cheer me on and cheer hard / While I destroy our democracy / They all stand up for me / Holding fingers in the air / Claim that I’m still the president / And unleash a true dream. Phoebe Celentano
Richmond Hill: I hope they stop accusing Trump. He will be placed on probation and held at Rikers Island for the duration of all his trials. A few months of stint in a NYC jail would make him turn down a plea pretty quickly. Robert Clolery
Manhattan: The letter from Voicer Sharon Austry reminds me of Trump’s claim that he could shoot someone on Fifth Ave. and not lose voters. What does it say about his base? They support his criminal behavior and, although supposedly made up of evangelicals, they condone his actions. What if the victim is one of their loved ones? How can these people live with themselves? How can we get them to do some soul searching and see the error of their ways? Jack D. Weiss
Camden, NJ: Sir Elton John’s music has been an iconic melody throughout my life. The whole world agreed. Regarding who was invited to entertain at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., I was also very surprised when President Biden awarded him the National Humanities Medal. Wayne E. Williams

Manhattan: I want to express my strong opposition to the way Gov. Hochul and Mayor Adams in handling the COVID-19 emergency. I feel that Adams’ decision to end the vaccine mandates on November 1 was completely unreasonable. That’s right if we can start to be more vulnerable to another explosion. And Hochul’s end of mask mandates at MTA facilities, which must be enforced, is extremely short-sighted. I just got over COVID right now and I’m incredibly cautious throughout. I hope the governor and mayor reconsider their decisions. Douglas Leeds
Bayside: The Inflation Reduction Act is the first major step taken by Congress and the Biden administration to address the climate crisis and provide meaningful investment in green energy solutions. But the agreement made by Sen. Chuck Schumer with Senator Joe Manchin will reverse this progress. The polluter loophole bill would accelerate fossil fuel projects, subject us to increasing amounts of climate-destroying greenhouse gases, remove states’ abilities under the Clean Water Act to block dangerous pipelines like the Constitution Pipeline in the Catskills and Williams Northeast Supply Enhancement Pipeline through New York Harbor and gut the environmental review process. It is necessary that Rep. Paul Tonko, the co-chair of the Subcommittee on Environment and Climate Change, will speak against this bill. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand must oppose its substance, and represent the majority of New Yorkers who want to work toward a sustainable future. Daniel Salamon
Brooklyn: I wish the media would stop putting so much pressure on Aaron Judge to set the home run record. If it happens, it happens. Charlie Pisano
Keyport, NJ: About Voicer Mitzi Belsky’s unprovoked attack on Keith Hernandez: Mitzi, the Mets have the best booth in baseball! Keith, Gary Cohen and Ron Darling are admired from coast to coast for their knowledge, energy and good humor. Sometimes it’s astute insight and sometimes it’s a gaff, but it’s always fun! Now that Keith is out with an injury, the booth isn’t much fun, but I wouldn’t trade it for anyone! Fran DiPalma
Bethpage, LI: Those sports jerks give us the most ridiculous statistics, for example: “This is the first game that (insert team) lost when it snowed in Bangladesh on a Saturday.” I wish they would just shut up and let’s watch the damn game. Martin Grasso
Sunnyside: We must have sympathy for the families of Demetry Aristud and LaShawn Whitfield for the two terrible tragedies they endured (“Cops didn’t protect wake, sez fam in suit,” Sept. 25). However, it seems that they should not blame Det. Javish Ortiz of the 40th Precinct for the gruesome murder of Whitfeld. It is also surprising that Sanford Rubenstein orchestrated the accusations against a decorated officer like Ortiz. Rubenstein was one of the first demagogues to “defund the police”, along with Charles Barron, Chirlane McCray and Bill de Blasio. Have people forgotten that McCray once said that a “city without police would be utopia”? The brutal murders of Aristud and Whitfield serve as perfect examples of what happens when you have a reduced police force. So, Rubenstein and the other defund-the-police maniacs are to blame for the rise in murders – not Ortiz. John Francis Fox
Brooklyn: As we celebrate the holy days of Rosh Hashanah, I hope that the Jewish community reflects on the harmful practices of yeshivas that endanger the next generation. Not only have the yeshivas failed to adequately educate their students (at a taxpayer expense of $1 billion over four years), according to a New York Times report, but they are also among the most vocal critics of life-saving COVID vaccinations. Why are our elected politicians afraid to stand up to the ultra-Orthodox community? Far from being anti-Semitic, it reflects a desire for the next generation to grow up educated and healthy. Joe Ferra
