Climate change has become a concern for many cities around the world. This results in a significant increase in temperature and makes it difficult for people to survive in scorching temperatures. In the midst of this scenario, Madrid is building a green wall around the city as a way to reduce pollution and combat climate change. It plans to plant almost 500,000 new trees that will extend 75 kilometers in an urban forest. The forest is mostly made up of plants and trees native to Spain, which makes for simple maintenance.

This section of forest will serve as a carbon sink for the Spanish capital. As a result, the temperature can be 2 degrees cooler under the shade of these trees than in the city.

This urban forest is part of Madrid’s comprehensive anti-pollution plan, which also calls for the construction of zero-emission bus routes and the gradual ban on polluting cars. There are playgrounds, bike paths, and forest walking trails. To encourage biodiversity, there is also green space on the bridges over the roads.

Environmental activist Mike Hudema explains this exclusive project in the Madrid forest through a video on his personal Twitter handle. The caption of the Twitter post read, “Madrid is building a huge forest belt around the city. 74km, half a million trees to fight extreme heat, air pollution and climate change.” In addition, Hudema also said further, “We have solutions. They will be enforced.”

Since being uploaded, the one-minute video has amassed over 18,000 views and garnered thousands of likes so far. Users wasted no time in praising this effort by the city authorities for a greener planet.

One user stated, “This needs to happen in the UK urgently.”

Another user suggested, “I wish AU and NZ cities would do this. Melbourne is losing a lot of trees.”

“It’s like watching Humanity wake up from its 200 year industrial nightmare where the Earth is a Candy store,” wrote one person.

Others hope that every city will implement such plans.

Here are some reactions:

According to Mariano Fuentes, councilor of the environment and urban development in Madrid, the authorities intend to improve the quality of the air throughout the capital to combat the effect of the “heat island” that occurs within the city. The plan will also absorb greenhouse gas emissions and connect all the forests that already exist around the city.

To absorb 175,000 tons of CO2 per year, the initiative will also use abandoned areas located between roads and buildings. Once completed, Madrid’s “green wall” will consist of a forest of native trees that will absorb CO2 and heat produced by human activities.
