“Our participation in the Mediterranean Pavilion at COP27, the global climate summit, with three conferences and an event organized by ENI CBC and PRIMA foundation – continued Mr Cervelli – is another opportunity to brought to the Interreg MED Program, to shed some light on the strategic role of the Program’s member states and local communities in creating transnational solutions to the Mediterranean’s most pressing challenges.

Finally – concluded Mr Cervelli – the COP27 Mediterranean Pavilion is also the perfect occasion to further interact with the main stakeholders who will help the Program to transfer its results beyond the area of ​​cooperation in the context of the implementation of Result Amplification Strategy.

From 6th to 18th November 2022, the Interreg MED Program, together with Thematic Communities and UNIMED – Mediterranean Universities Union, will be at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, at the Mediterranean Pavilion, a joint initiative of 15 key actors coordinated by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) together with the United Nations Environment Programme, the Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP-MAP) and the PRIMA Foundation.

“Through collaboration with other key initiatives in the Mediterranean, the Interreg MED Program wants to bring global attention to the role that local authorities and communities have already played in these challenging times” stated Sophie Scarvelis, Head of Project Unit of the Interreg Euro-MED Program Joint Secretariat. “In addition, we also want to emphasize the added value of working in a transnational cooperation framework, such as Interreg Euro-MED, and together with other EU cooperation programs such as Interreg NEXT Med and PRIMA Foundation – continued Mrs Scarvelis – because it can. facilitate the transfer, replication and scaling up of effective tools and solutions developed and tested in projects on the ground”.

Over two weeks, the Interreg MED Program will welcome many regional stakeholders in the Mediterranean Pavilion – public and private, scientific and academic, but also technical experts, policy makers and civil society – to highlight the pressing challenges currently facing the region and the innovative solutions that have been developed entire Mediterranean. More specifically, the Program hosts three debates (in a hybrid format) covering the most pressing Mediterranean challenges addressed by its thematic communities:

1/Climate action plans in Mediterranean tourism: a vision for the future”, 11th November, 10 to 11 am.

The Sustainable Tourism Community organized the debate mainly highlighting the urgent need to decarbonize the tourism sector which in the next 20 years will represent 10% of global CO2 emissions, as well as the potential of destinations of tourism in climate mitigation and adaptation. change. In particular, the debate will present the “Glasgow declaration” as an effective tool to create a more sustainable development path.

2/ “Biodiversity challenges in the Mediterranean: action against marine litter“, 16th November, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Organized by the Biodiversity Protection Community, the event will look at ongoing efforts to address the effects of marine litter on Mediterranean ecosystems, debating the knowledge available and gaps left to address those cumulative threat to the Mediterranean as a biodiversity hotspot.

3/ “Promoting green and blue growth in the Mediterranean: adopting circular economy strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation”, 17th November, 3 to 4 p.m.

Organized by Green Growth and Blue Growth Communities, the debate will highlight the interlinkages between the green and blue economy and the role of public authorities to promote innovation in this field to adapt and mitigate climate change. .

Finally, to promote synergies between the various cooperation programs funded by the EU, ENI CBC / Interreg NEXT Med, Prima Foundation and Interreg Euro-MED organized a round table on concrete ways to continue.: “Accelerating the green transition in the Mediterranean: spotlight on funding opportunities“, 9th November, 4:15 to 5:15 pm. This event will present the environmental priorities of three different EU-supported programs with Mediterranean coverage – namely Interreg NEXT Med, Interreg Euro-Med and PRIMA – and will provide information on available funding and if how to access financial support. The event also highlighted the leading role of the Union for the Mediterranean in creating operational synergies among regional projects to increase their visibility and overall impact.
