JID, according to Ms Tay, is a living laboratory focused on driving innovation through collaboration.

Unlike the old manufacturing estates, which were located far from residential areas, the JID was built so that close bonds could be formed between the tenants of the JID and its neighboring communities.

For example, the new pedestrian overhead bridge across the Pan-Island Expressway will enable Jurong West residents to access JID facilities such as the Jurong Eco-Garden, recreational facilities and programs. This will ensure that the spaces are well used, even after office hours and on weekends.

“Research shows that a green work environment with social spaces supports a healthy workforce and improves mental health. We create a vibrant environment at JID to live, work, play and learning, not only for its tenants but for the communities that surround it,” Ms Tay explained.

He added that the residential community is a talent pool for JID industries to tap into, in addition to the nearby NTU.

“To inform residents of our situation and its opportunities, we will hold job fairs, surveys, seminars, exhibitions, competitions, celebrations and more,” he said.

“With the feedback from these sessions and our regular engagement with grassroots advisors and groups, we can also address any concerns from residents.”

An example for future lands

JID’s different planning, construction and management methods can be replicated in future industrial estates in Singapore.

JTC has adopted what is called Integrated Digital Delivery, which uses digital technologies to integrate work processes and connect stakeholders working on a project throughout its construction and lifecycle.

For example, a centralized system can track the status of components in buildings, including their manufacturing, delivery and installation, and flag any conflicts with different subcontractor designs.

For Bulim Square, the agency also implemented the Common Data Environment (CDE), a digital platform that serves as a central repository for contract documents, project letters, construction information models and other data. With the digitization of quality inspection forms and other documents, construction companies can monitor and generate insights into their work, enabling improvements.

In the next three years, major companies will start their operations in the district, including Surbana Jurong Campus in 2023, Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center in Singapore in 2024, and SATS food hub in 2025.

“JID will lead the growth of Industry 4.0 and lead the transformation of industries to become more technology-centric and collaborative,” said Ms Tang.

Ms Tay added: “For JID, we are focused on a holistic design that encourages the harmonious integration of our industrial needs with the environment. We aim to create a new standard for industrials land – one that is more environmentally friendly, and closer to the community.
